To get into orbit, you do need an engine. This is a test firing of the latest rocket engine at the Stennis Space Center near New Orleans. A free place to visit. Witnessing a test firing is even more thrilling to some than a launch as the experience lasts much longer. The 'smoke' isn't smoke - it's steam from the water pouring on the test pad to keep it from cracking under the intense heat and to reduce sound levels that may also cause damage.
